Overthinking

Overthinking is when we dwell on something, a problem, school work, or just getting through the day and doing all that needs to be done.

At times it can feel like there’s a swarm of bees inside our head, each vying for attention. Over-analysis or having too many things going at once increases stress, and a loss of focus on what’s important. Our judgement can be affected and we can fall into a cycle of negativity. Doing anything becomes difficult.

If you feel you may be overthinking, some simple things can help you change your mood and start using your thoughts positively.

1. Awareness. Be aware if your thinking is speeding up, if you’re feeling doubts, stress or anxiety. Awareness means you are recognising what’s happening and you can act to slow your thoughts, change and bring back perspective.

2. Don’t think of what can go wrong, but of what can go right. In many cases of overthinking we can be prone to think of the negative things that might happen and end up feeling stuck there. Next time you sense yourself starting to spiral in that direction, stop!. Visualize all the things that can go right and keep those thoughts present and up front. Replace negativity with positivity – Things can and do go right. Think of and do what makes you happy!

3. Put things into perspective. It’s always easy to make things bigger and more negative than they need to be. The next time you catch yourself making a mountain out of a molehill, ask yourself how much it will matter now. You can always come back to things when your head is less busy

4 Making progress is good enough! We don’t need to strive to be perfect in all we do. Remember, every opportunity is a new beginning, a place to start again. We can’t predict the future, but we can take pleasure in the here and now, try our best and be grateful for what we have. Reflect on how the actions you’re taking are helping calm your mind and take pride in the progression you’re making to manage overthinking. Take a deep breath and reward yourself with a positive thought
